  • Gina Yacone
  • Topic: Seat at the Table – Security Leadership though Tabletop Exercises
  • Abstract: Imagine that your organization is infected with ransomware what do you do? From a critical breach to a minor incident, your organization’s success lies in the speed of detection, effectiveness in containment, and accuracy of remediation. As an IT and security professional, you are on the front line. How should you prepare? This talk will explore the role of IT and security leadership as it is relates to incident response now, and how it opens the door to reveal IT leadership as it could be through preparation. Tabletop exercises are simulated based scenarios that can be used as the basis for an organization’s incident response development, as well as enhance cognition and more accurate perception of decision makers, contrasting with the shortcomings of traditional incident response methods. Tabletop exercises are an effective and safe mechanism to shape, enhance and test the awareness of decision makers, and the gamification of the exercise yields a higher level of engagement of participants. These exercises also allow security leaders to take their rightful seat at the table, be heard, and better understand organizational operations workflows. This talk will explore the best practices as to how to organize tabletop exercises, as well as learn how to shape, enhance and test your team’s level of preparedness before current and future challenges that can arise from a cyber incident. Gina will also discuss the common themes and shortcomings she sees working with different organizations through preforming tabletop exercises.
  • LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Participants of this session will:
  1. Learn the key components of an effective tabletop exercise.
  2. Understand the tabletop exercise process through the perspective of all participants (from the facilitator to shareholder).
  3. Appreciate why tabletop exercises increase operational resilience, and improve security effectiveness and efficiency.
  4. Learn how to create a high ROI by conducting tabletop exercises.
